Five daughters and a daughter-in-law in the house, a social enterprise run by an all-female staff serving predominantly female students, and Nepali girls from incredibly hard backgrounds living with us… you can imagine that these days my conversations revolve heavily around feelings, feelings about feelings, feelings we thought we were done feeling, appropriate ways to express our feelings, and how what we said or did may have made someone else feel what they’re feeling. In the midst of it all, I’ve come to normalize addressing our negative thoughts…

We’ve all had them.
Taking these thoughts captive is a discipline and a spiritual practice that requires intentionality, awareness, and grace. And the more that we practice, the quicker we become at replacing the thoughts, and eventually, the less frequent they occur. When recently opening up about the negative thoughts we struggle with, the honesty and venerability was beautiful and deeply encouraging. Hearing the girls speak truth over one another was powerful, and as we walked through the steps of replacing those thoughts, they were comforted to realize that there is no shortage of truth to cling to.
