Too much “good” gone bad

1 Corinthians 10:23 (NIV) “Everything is permissible”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”—but not everything is constructive.

What is something in your life that was a “good” thing, but as in the verse in 1 Corinthians states was something that although good, was not beneficial or constructive for you?

This is a great question. As I sit here and think about all the things in my life that apply I am reminded that regardless of what I choose to write about now, too much of anything is neither beneficial nor constructive because it can begin to fill us in the places that only God should occupy. Too much of a “good” thing can enable that thing to become our source of happiness, content, stability or strength etc. If we are not relying solely on God for those things, we are living with a distorted view of who He is and who we are in Christ.

While I could tell you about a number of things I have overindulged in, I’d like to share that even serving in my church has in the past fallen into the category of “too much of a good thing”. I spread myself so darn thin one season it’s a wonder I didn’t fall flat on my face. I was singin in the choir and on worship team, I was in like three Bible studies, I was on the kitchen team (and baking treats every weekend), I was very active in youth ministry, I served at a local soup kitchen and I said yes to anyone and everything else asked of me. It wasn’t long before all that good turned into a whole lot a bad. Time with my family took a back seat, and ironically, so did my time with God, and my heart lost sight of the meaning and purpose behind all of my good deeds. Although serving is good, too much of it was definitely not constructive.

Oh, so true, true, true!!! I was in that exact same spot, and where did I end up? Not doing anything well–only offering up a portion of myself instead of all of me!Then I did some reading and some research into this very subject. And what did I find that sticks most in my mind about this? This statement: As Christians we are called tobalance, not imbalance, evenin the area of our work for God.So, I am in total agreement with you–too much of anything–even in our service to God–is not a good thing. Have a wonderful and blessed day!! Beth

How many of us get lost in serving Him instead of truly knowing Him is likely impossible to count.Great post!

Boy, can I relate to the over-serving story. I did the same thing, to the point that worship services were all about performing and working, not actually worshiping. I lost all of my spirituality in favor of my religion. And I had to leave it all behind. Wonderful post.

Those in ministry fall SO easily into this trap. BTDT!Thank you for pointing out the importance of FAMILY! What good is our church family when our own family is put on the “back burner?”Excellent Thoughts!Happy Weekend!-esthermay

Yes ma’am…you nailed this one, girl! And the over-serving thing is a lesson probably every well-meaning hard working believer has learned at one point or another, I think. Well written!
